Developed in 1951, the variable geometry turbocharger contributed a responsiveness that boosted diesels’ performance and efficiency.

Turbocharging has long been used to improve performance in both commercial and passenger vehicle applications, but increasing control of boosting systems has remained a concern.

Global diesel engine sales

Industry analysts have predicted that global diesel engine sales are forecast to rise 7.7% each year until 2017. Higher production of medium and heavy trucks, and buses and off highway machinery, will combine with a rebound in light vehicle output in western Europe and the growing popularity of diesel cars in a number of nations, most notably the U.S. and India, to generate increased engine demand.
